From 27 June to 14 September, 2025, the National Museums of Bologna with MAMbo –Museum of Modern Art of Bologna's Civic Museums Sector – presents the exhibition Il Giardino delle Risonanze. La Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna incontra il MAMbo [The Garden of Resonances. The Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna meets MAMbo].
The fulcrum of the exhibition is in the Salone degli Incamminati in the Pinacoteca di Bologna. The itinerary involves more than thirty works from the deposits and Cabinet of Drawings and Prints, as well as some loans from the Museo Morandi and the Biblioteca Comunale dell'Archiginnasio. These works interact with those by sixteen artists who represent the contemporary scene in Bologna. At the same time, MAMbo will host a focus event to highlight the resonances created by the encounter between the two museums' diverse collections.
The exhibition space of the Pinacoteca evokes an imaginary cultural garden where the balances and contradictions of humanity and nature are symbolically represented: ancient ties that the processes initiated since the industrial revolution have made us lose sight of, but which still echo in our language, starting with the term 'culture', from the Latin colere, 'to cultivate'.
Overlooking the courtyard of the former Jesuit Novitiate of Sant'Ignazio - an authentic transformed garden - the exhibition moves in stages that construct dialogues between ancient and modern art, around the concrete and symbolic elements of the garden. From the motif of air in motion that inspires Anna Tappari's work and Cuoghi and Corsello's presentation of Anton Raphael Mengs' 18th-century portrait of Pope Clement XIII, we move on to fountains and statues, which feature the poetic and sensory work of Eva Marisaldi and Enrico Serotti, and a video installation work by the ZAPRUDER group, juxtaposed with a print by Francis Bacon and a bust by Alessandro Algardi. We then move to the physical and interior landscape that inspires the work of Alessandra Dragoni and Arianna Zama, alongside graphics, photography and paintings from Giuseppe De Nittis to Giorgio Morandi. Then comes the performative creation of Riccardo Baruzzi and paintings by Emma Masut alongside examples of 17th- and 18th-century portraiture, including the portrait of Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun's daughter. This is followed by the sculpture of Italo Zuffi and the video work of Fanny & Alexander and ZAPRUDER in dialogue with the illustrations of Hans Fronius and the painting of Luigi Serra on the themes of metamorphosis and memory . The idea of limits and boundaries – to be respected or transcended – emerges from Paolo Chiasera's comparisons with the 20th-century avant-garde artists Otto Dix and Bruno Munari, and Zimmerfrei's photography with the 17th-century work of Alessandro Tiarini. These culminate in a meditation on sacred space evoked by flanking the work of Tommaso Silvestroni and the 19th-century artist Valentino Solmi. The exhibition concludes with the musical work of Emidio Clementi and Stefano Pilia and the installations of Federico Zamboni and Filippo Tappi. These are placed in dialogue with the Baroque work of Guido Cagnacci and the engravings of Pablo Picasso and Alberto Savinio on the theme of love and instinct, mysterious forces that precede logic and unite the hidden depths of the human soul with all of nature.
At MAMbo, the resonances find form in the encounter between Renato Guttuso's 20th-century masterpiece I funerali di Togliatti [The Funeral of Togliatti] and the 19th century works of Antonio Muzzi and Enrico Romolo, with two canvases depicting Roman history and Risorgimento iconography.
With Il Giardino delle Risonanze, the interim director of the National Museums of Bologna – Regional Directorate of National Museums of Emilia-Romagna Costantino D'Orazio and the director of MAMbo – Museum of Modern Art of Bologna, Lorenzo Balbi, have sought to reinforce the dialogue between two cultural institutions that play complementary roles in the variety of their collections, developing a common reflection on the heritage that also represents an opportunity to exhibit works normally kept in storage for logistical and conservation reasons.
